Mandate

Galerie Verticale Art Contemporain is the only artist-run centre in Laval. Its mandate is to promote modern art exhibition, production and research in the region surrounding the Montreal metropolitan area. The centre also supports parallel activities and cultural exchanges between artists, the public and the artistic community in order to stimulate reflection on theories and practices in modern art.

By the nature of its location on the outskirts of Montreal, Galerie Verticale has become a launching pad for emerging artists, who show their work in its gallery spaces and during our annual group exhibition. The gallery is especially interested in contemporary issues in suburbia, redefining aesthetic perceptions, exploring the possibilities of new media and reinventing traditional media.

The windowless gallery offers an unobstructed setting for presenting works of art. The resource centre’s reception and reading room is an inviting and pleasant space, well suited to meetings and special projects.

History

Galerie Verticale Art Contemporain was founded on October 9, 1991. Started by a group of artists, the Société des arts visuels de Laval was incorporated in 1987. The Société created the artist-run centre to encourage professional artistic practice in Laval. The centre’s distinctive policy of self-governance makes it a flexible place that adapts to artists’ needs, within the context of research and development in the visual arts. The centre strives to be a dynamic environment for exchanging and developing artistic ideas, while contributing to the advancement of modern art in Laval.
